Misión Nuestra Señora de Loreto was the first mission in the Californias, started in 1699. The original Virgen de Loreto, brought to shore by Padre Kino in 1697, is on display in the church's 18th-century gilded altar. The mission is on Salvatierra, across from the central square. Adjacent to the mission church and of equal or greater interest is the Museo de las Misiones. It has a small but complete collection of historical and anthropological exhibits. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9am to 1pm and 1:45 to 6pm.

Loreto Activities
The main reasons to come to Loreto are the Sea of Cortez and the five islands just offshore; they offer exceptional kayaking, sailing, diving, and fishing. Isla del Carmen and Isla Danzante are wonderful overnight sailing destinations. Kayakers launch here for trips to the offshore islands or down the remote coast of the Sierra la Giganta to La Paz. Loreto is the nearest major airport and city to Bahía de Magdalena (Magdalena Bay), the southernmost of the major gray whale calving lagoons on the Pacific coast of Baja.
